I often get DM’s from people on my Instagram and Twitter asking me how to be successful. Now, I’m not saying that I’m successful or anything. Far from it. I’m on the grind with all of you. But in my last 4 years of working as a creative, I’ve learned few things that might help other fellow creatives, like you, to take the right next step.
So here’s my answer to the question:
Learn, Create, Share
Be a sponge. Learn as much as you can.
Read every book on the topic, take every course, email people to be your mentors, watch YouTube, videos, take Skillshare classes, go to workshops, knowledge is everywhere. Go grab it.
It’s super fun to sit and learn new things, new techniques, new theories, new ways of doing things. But you’ll only grow by applying what you have learned.Create thing every day.
That’s how I started learning hand lettering and calligraphy. On June 1, 2016, I decided to do a 100 Days of Lettering challenge. There were times when I was too tired and had a creative block and didn’t want to create anything, but I did anyway. The act of sitting down and working on your craft, even for 5 mins, is waaay more valuable than reading about it.
Attention is the game. In order to be successful, you have to have people’s attention first. And the way to get people’s attention is to create awesome things and share it online. The more people know about you and your work, the higher the chances of you hitting gold
Remember: You should not do this for likes and retweets. And you should definitely not do this with the hopes of being famous. Share your work as a way to build up a body of work, document your journey, and attract True fans and potential clients.
Plus, it’s super inspiring to watch a person’s quest for mastery and success. It’s the hero’s journey.
Hope it was helpful.
